NASA Mars Lander
The NASA Mars lander, named Perseverance, has been traveling through space for nearly seven months and has finally reached its destination. On February 18, 2021, the lander entered Mars' atmosphere and began its perilous descent onto the planet's surface.
According to NASA officials, the landing site was chosen for its potential to provide valuable insights into the planet's geological history and potential biosignatures. Dr.
Kathryn Stack Morgan, a NASA geologist, stated that 'the landing site is a 45-kilometer-wide impact crater that is home to a vast deltaic deposit, which is a promising place to search for signs of past or present life on Mars.' The Perseverance lander is equipped with a suite of instruments, including a rock-corrosion instrument, a ground-penetrating radar, and a sample collection system, which will allow scientists to study the Martian surface and subsurface in unprecedented detail.
Over the next two years, the lander will explore the Martian surface, collecting samples and data that will help scientists better understand the planet's history and potential for supporting life.
